The New Dirham Symbol
The new symbol is based on the letter “D” with two horizontal lines that reflect stability and draw inspiration from the UAE flag. For the digital version, the symbol appears inside a circle featuring the UAE flag colors.
What is the Digital Dirham?
The Digital Dirham is a blockchain-based version of the UAE’s currency that will work alongside physical money. It’s part of the Financial Infrastructure Transformation (FIT) Programme that started in 2023 and is now backed by federal law, making it official legal tender in the UAE.
The Digital Dirham is expected to launch in late 2025, starting with the retail sector. People and businesses will access it through banks, exchange houses, and fintech companies.
Why This Matters for Your Business
If you are doing business in the UAE, here is what you need to know:
- Lower costs: The blockchain technology should reduce payment processing fees and make international transactions more affordable.
- Smart contracts: The Digital Dirham will work with smart contracts, meaning complex business deals can be automated and settled instantly.
- Digital wallet: A new wallet system will handle everything from retail purchases to cross-border payments and transfers.
- Better security: The system promises improved protection against fraud and financial crimes.
What This Means for Businesses
As a business owner or manager in the UAE, you might need to:
- Update your payment systems to accept Digital Dirhams
- Look into how smart contracts could streamline your operations
- Stay informed about new regulations as they develop
